General Liability
The foundational coverage that protects your handyman business from third-party injury and property damage claims.
General liability (GL) is the core policy almost every handyman needs. It responds to claims of third-party bodily injury and property damage arising from your work โ the two most common ways a job can go wrong for someone else.
If a client, tenant, or bystander is injured because of your work โ they trip over your tools, something you installed falls โ GL covers the legal defense and settlement costs.
If your work damages a client's property โ a repair causes a leak, you accidentally damage flooring or a fixture while working โ GL responds to the claim.
GL doesn't cover your own tools and equipment (that's a separate tools & equipment policy), your own injuries (that's workers comp), or errors that don't involve physical injury or property damage, like a job simply not meeting a client's expectations.
You're in and out of clients' homes and businesses constantly, often working near expensive property and around people. One claim โ a slip, a damaged floor, water damage from a repair โ can cost more than years of premiums combined. It's also increasingly required by homeowners, property managers, and GCs before they'll hire you.
Most handymen carry $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate โ the per-occurrence number is the most paid on any single claim, the aggregate is the total for the year. Some commercial clients and larger GCs require $2M/$4M.
